The Myth About Motivation. . . and How It's Keeping You Stuck

August 9, 2022 Lisa Day Harvey

You know what you want:

  • To feel GOOD (no more aches and pain)

  • To enjoy your life

  • To feel fit and confident in your body

Right?

So why does it feel so hard to attain? Why aren’t your goals enough to kick you into action? Why is it so hard to get motivated?

Can I tell you a secret?. . .

MOTIVATION IS OVERRATED

. . . or maybe it’s more fair to say that’s it’s misunderstood.

How many times have you beat yourself up because you know you really SHOULD have woken up earlier to get a workout in but you just didn’t feel like it?

Or you WANT to start eating better. . . BUT you already had that bagel with cream cheese (and cream and sugar in the coffee) for breakfast so you might as well wait and start tomorrow?

If you’re like me, it’s probably more than once - and it’s definitely NOT helpful in building a new habit.

The truth is, waiting until you feel motivated to workout or make different food choice is sorta like expecting to feel rested BEFORE going to bed.

It doesn’t work that way.

You sleep (action) to feel rested (feeling). The feeling follows the action.

Let me say that again, FEELING FOLLOWS ACTION.

Motivation isn’t something that some people have and others don’t or that magically shows up one day.

Motivation is the FEELING that results from taking ACTION.

You do the workout (especially when you don’t want to). You eat the broccoli. You make the choice that builds the future you want rather than delaying it for another day.

When you do the work, over and over again, you start seeing and feeling the results:

  • More energy

  • Less aches

  • Pants that fit more comfortably

  • More definition

  • Less brain fog

When you experience how good that feels, THAT creates the motivation to do it again. Keep it up and that new action becomes a habit.

You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to feel motivated. You just need to do it.
