The Blog
Here’s where I share ways to get more out of your workout with less strain and bring the benefits of your Pilates and yoga practices into the rest of your daily life.
Pilates and yoga are both mindful movement practices, based on a belief that health & fitness are essential to living a full, happy life.
The differences are less about the movements and more about the intent behind them. Let’s dive in and discover which one might be best for you.
I ❤️ Pilates. . . It's what finally made me feel strong, fit and most of all - not broken!! (which was how I had been feeling for years ever since a car accident at age 19).
The exercises are great (and a great challenge) but I think what makes it magical are what we call the Pilates Principles.
What the heck are the Pilates Principles?!
So glad you asked. . .
No one wants to be in pain.
The amount spent globally on pain management is in the Billions of $$.
Yet SO many people ARE in pain.
Why?
In my own journey and in working with hundreds of people of all ages looking to change their bodies (and their relationship with it), these are the things that I see make the difference time and time again.
They aren’t sexy or earth shattering but they work.
These simple (but powerful) keys 🔑 🔑 🔑 make the difference in sticking with something until it becomes a habit.
With over 41K views, it seems people keep coming back to this 3 minute psoas stretch video for hip and low back pain relief.
Good posture is sexy. Bad posture has its effects as well. . . neck pain, tension headaches, stiff shoulders and back. Try some quick ways to bring relief and stand taller.
Do you remember the last time you were able to wake up and bounce out of bed. . . with NO aches or pains?
Has it been awhile?
What do you do about it (besides internally curse growing older)?
Here’s a collection of my go to moves. Proven favorites that having me moving and feel better in under 10 minutes.
You know what you want:
To feel GOOD (no more aches and pain)
To enjoy your life
To feel fit and confident in your body
Right?
So why does it feel so hard to attain? Why is it so hard to get motivated?
Can I tell you a secret?. . . MOTIVATION IS OVERRATED. . . or maybe it’s more fair to say that’s it’s misunderstood.
Once again, things are starting to change. Restrictions are slowly lifting, allowing us to each make choices about where, when, how often and how we will rejoin our communities. Whether you’re ready to get back in the studio or feel most comfortable at home, there are options for working out with me.
While we can't gather in the studio right now, we can still practice together virtually! Below are links to some full length classes as well as short videos on improving form and feeling better. Make sure you scroll all the way down for 2 of my favorite quick stretches for the neck, hips and low back using a foam roller!
That question seems harder to answer these days - especially if I'm being honest with myself.
Does there need to be a clear answer? Aren't mixed up feelings just part of the growth process? Our world, our communities, our relationships are undergoing massive changes. Each of us are changing too. Each day brings new joys and frustrations (often in the same package):
Does it ever feel like your body is playing a game with you? You think you've got it all figured out. . . and then some new mystery arises?
THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO DEVELOP A STRONGER CORE WITHOUT DOING CRUNCHES!!
I wish someone had told me that a long time ago.
I wish someone had told me that just because I was in pain, it didn't mean I was broken and that a back is more than an MRI report.
Day by day, we'll get through. There will be heartbreak and frustration but there will also be moments of joy and connection. For now, I choose to focus on what I CAN do (rather than what I can't) and am SO excited to share some new offerings with you!! . . .
While school may have started months ago and Starbucks long ago brought back pumpkin spice everything, it doesn't really feel like fall in South Florida until the cooler breezes start blowing (don't they feel AMAZING?!) and our Northern friends start heading south.
Season is almost here and I’ve got some great new things lined up for you!
Friday, August 30th will be my last Candlelight Yoga class at Zeal Yoga and the last weekly public yoga class I’ll be teaching (for now). To call this bittersweet fails to capture. . .
Do you ever wonder how you can be a part of something bigger or how to create change in the world?
I do.
It seems overwhelming. There are so many good causes and so many groups taking on massive challenges - the kind that don't get magically resolved over night or even over a year or two. Where to start? How can one person make a difference?
One of the greatest lessons I continue to learn from both my yoga & Pilates practices is to listen to my body. The more skillful I become at this, the more able I am to give it what it needs when it first begins to whisper rather than to wait until it's screaming out in pain or immobilized by fatigue.
My introduction to Restorative Yoga felt like a lifeline to inner peace amidst the madness surrounding me.
Ten minute daily practice to get out of your head and reconnect to your body to build self-awareness and compassion, release tension and heal.
E-motion-s are meant to be in motion. When we shut down from feeling them, they don’t disappear. They become stagnant swamps of hurt, anger and pain, slowly poisoning us and our relationships until we clean them out. I learned that if I could just keep breathing, those feelings would rise and crest and eventually dissipate. Breathing then became a way of checking in with myself.
It showed me a new way to stay present no matter what the world threw at me. I didn’t have to armor up. I didn’t’ have to shrink away or pretend that everything was fine.
It was love at first bite when I first tried this healthy-licious vegan salad at The Island Bee in Palm Beach. As I’m not often in that area, I decided right away that I was going to need to find a way to make a version of this fresh, tangy and filling salad at home.
What's the famous John Steinbeck quote about the best laid plans of mice and men? If you're like me, you mean well. You have every good intention of eating better, working out more, stressing less, spending less, sleeping more and generally being kinder and happier.
And then. . .
Yes, you will get stronger.
Yes, you will diminish and forget about your aches & pains.
Yes, you will look better in your clothes (and out of them too ;)
But it’s also so much more than a workout - it’s a lifestyle.
Are you sick and tired of feeling broken? Ready to live without the pain and frustration of chronic injury and/or self-defeating beliefs (I suck at this. There’s no way I can do this. Etc. . .)? Want to find the strength and confidence to go after something that feels out of reach?
This one simple question will help get you there. . .
Each day we make decisions and take actions, small and big, that either lead us closer to the person we want to be and the life we want to create or further from it. Intent is our internal road map, guiding us forward toward our goals. Without intent, we're walking SOMEWHERE, yet without direction.
Starting takes guts.
Whether it's rolling out a yoga mat for the first time, creating your first piece of art, traveling somewhere new or learning a new skill; there is something magical and terrifying about trying something for the first time.
Are you feeling it? There aren’t enough hours in the day. There isn’t enough coffee to keep you going or yoga to stay grounded.
You’re busy . . . so busy that you don’t remember what it’s like to actually have a cleared to do list or to give yourself permission to do absolutely nothing at all. You can’t focus, maybe you can’t sleep. Is it just you? . . .
It took 10+ years of pain and 2 years of a consistent yoga practice to realize that - without meaning to - I WAS MAKING THINGS WORSE. I was so unaware of my own habits and posture that I didn’t realize how much extra strain I was creating.
It took a handful of amazing teachers shining light on my (massive) blind spot. . . many times a week for 2 years until it finally sank in.
That’s the power of a great teacher.
